RELIGION
Concepts covered: The Four Marks of the Catholic Church, The Six Seasons of the Church Year, The Seven Sacraments, The lives of the Saints, and most importantly, The Life and Teaching of Jesus.
First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion:
The children prepare to receive the sacraments of First Reconciliation in the fall and their First Holy Communion in the spring of the 3rd grade year.
Part of the preparation was to learn the Act of Contrition and the steps necessary to make a good confession. Father Anthony also visited our class for a Question and Answer period prior to their First Reconciliation on December 16, 2017 in order to alleviate any nervousness.
The children are now anxiously looking forward to receiving their first Holy Communion on May 5th, 2018.

MATHEMATICS
Concepts covered: Addition and Subtraction with regrouping into the thousands, Multiplication and Division, What is a fraction, Geometric Shapes, Volume, Time on an Analog clock, Making change in money, and Problem Solving Strategies.
***Since mastery of the Basic Math Facts is required, the students practice their facts using XtraMath.org at least 3 times a week.
LANGUAGE ARTS
Concepts covered: All parts of speech including all types of nouns and pronouns, action and linking verbs, descriptive adjectives and adverbs and types of sentences and dictionary skills.
Writing across the curriculum is an essential component of 3rd grade language arts. The students must know grammar in order to write successfully. Editing and revising skills are also part of the Language Arts Program.
READING
Concepts covered; Elements of fiction and non-fiction, introduction of various genre, characterization, cause and effect, making inferences, compare and contrast, using context clues to aid comprehension.
The students use close reading strategies to locate evidence in the text to support their thinking in both fiction and non-fiction reading. They then use the evidence from the text to support their writing either in narrative, expository or persuasive form.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Concepts covered: Continents, Oceans, Mapping Skills of the US and the World, Three Branches of Government, Historical and Current Events.
The school provides a monthly publication called Geography Spin in which the children are able to read about the world they live in and then utilize their newly acquired mapping skills to locate these interesting locations.
Current events are introduced and discussed in a weekly publication called Scholastic News Magazine.

SCIENCE
Concepts covered: Water Cycle, Three States of Matter, Inventions, Habitats, The interdependence of both plants and animals on the various Biomes of the Earth.
Every third grader participates in our STEM Convention held in April of each school year. The children are required to identify a real-life problem, and invent something to solve that problem. The finished product must include a written explanation, as well as a demonstration of how their invention works.
Science topics are introduced and discussed in a monthly publication called Science Spin.
